New Zealand's Southland

Milford Sound and Horse Trekking in New Zealand

After leaving the Routburn Track week picked up a rental car and made our way south. We used an Airbnb outside Whare Creek as our base of operations to explore Milford Sound and Manapouri. Be sure to bring a full tank of gas if you're headed to Milford Sound, and be extra cautious for distracted tourists on the road!

Milford Sound was spectacular and seeing it from the water is the way to go if you only have a day.

Horse Trekking in Orepuki

One of my wife's must do's on this trip was horseback riding, called horse trekking by the Kiwis. After a lot of internet searching my wife found Orepuki Horse Treks. Before heading south to Orepuki we got in a beautiful sunrise run in Whare Creek. Our horse trekking guide, Elfie was knowledgeable and kept up a good conversation. She also tailored the ride to our level of experience. My wife was delighted to be able to canter along the beach. I also cantered on my Clydesdale, but it wasn't as much fun with my Canon 5d bouncing up into my ribs! Elfie's bacon-eating miniature pony, Buddy, was the star of the show.

As I mentioned before, check out Orepuki Horse Treks if you're in Southland. In my next post I'll share images from the Catlins and the south islands east coast. Thanks for checking out the blog!
